As a brief aside, this time of year and these art events got me thinking about the film Dead Poet’s Society, and the difference appreciating the arts makes. And if I may borrow and modify a bit a line from John Keating, the teacher in Dead Poet’s Society, on the importance of the arts:
We don’t read and write poetry (or act) because it’s cute. We read and write poetry (and act) because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion.
Medicine, law, business, engineering - these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love…these are what we stay alive for.
…The powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse!
