🏠︎ Lokal Life Letter #30

This Week's News & Events in Stillwater

Good morning, Stillwater!

Thank you for all your votes last week. Design 2 edged out design 1.

I noticed some themes were people liked the simplicity of design 1 while others liked the fun, bright colors of 2 and how it would stand out from other cards. We’ve tried to blend in the feedback in the updated look (below). And we’re excited to announce we have some great restaurants already on there!

  • Persimmon Hill Farm & Bakery

  • Granny’s Kitchen

  • Hideaway Pizza

  • Don Pibil

We toned down the color a little, added the logo, and the frog. Lots of you liked the frog.

On the back we’re keeping it pretty simple so you can focus on the deals!

More are on the way, pending talks. If you’re a local restaurant and would like to be included, just click “reply”!

In today’s edition:

  • A golfer’s dozen — Cowboy Golf wins the NCAA title for its 12th time! 🏌

  • Town & Gown prepares to go Into The Woods 🌲

  • Prepare your cobbler/canning gear 🍑

Let’s get right to it!

Bloom With Grace Boutique opened last October and is run by OSU grads and local family the Greens. Amy Green and her daughters run the shop at 813 S. Main, just a door up from Murphy’s Department Store.

It’s a faith-based boutique with a thoughtful mix of clothing, jewelry, Bibles, devotionals, journals. They even have a newly arrived jalapeño & pickle seasoning, which just gives you a taste of the fun variety they carry!

They’re still a newer face on Main Street, so stop in, say hi, and check out their latest perfumes, gifts, or journals next time you’re downtown.

Stillwater Community Band Plays Tonight! 🎶 🎺

Did you know the Stillwater Community Band dates back to 1906? Nearly 120 years later, they’re still at it (not with the same people of course, that would be…strange) striking up their first concert of the summer tonight at 7 PM at the Stillwater Community Center.

If you can’t make it to tonight’s show, don’t worry! Mark your calendar for their next show on June 12. As always, it’s free and open to the public. Maybe next year we’ll be enjoying these summer concerts outside at Block 34. Wouldn’t that be something?

Millions of Peaches, Peaches for (us)! 🍑

A truck load of delicious Georgia peaches is coming to town soon. This is advance notice in case you need to get your canning or cobbler game ready. It’s $45 for a 20-lbs box of peaches. They’ll have Blackberries and honey on hand too at $35 and $15 respectively. They don’t accept credit cards but do accept Cash or Venmo.

You’ll find them in the OK Discount Construction Supply parking lot (901A E 6th Ave), starting around 8 AM. You can keep track of their schedule and sign up for updates here. And here’s something you could make with those peaches:

Town & Gown Goes Into the Woods 🌲🎭

Town & Gown Theatre is closing out its 74th season with a theatre lovers classic: Into the Woods. If you’re like me and have never seen it before, Board member Jacob Boyd tells me it’s a musical that mashes together fairy tales like Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood with both humor and heartache.

Directed by Timothy Cole (you might’ve seen him as Lumiere, Spider, or Otto Frank in past shows), this production features a cast of Town & Gown veterans and a few exciting newcomers. Performances run June 11–15 and June 18–22, with evening shows at 7:30 PM and Sunday matinees at 2:30 PM.

🎟️ Tickets go on sale next Monday, June 9. Better get tickets early because this is a perennial crowd-pleaser bound to fill up fast!
💵 $18 for adults, $16 for military, students, and seniors

LOCAL BUSINESS

🍯 New Local Biz: Fifty-Eight Acre Wood

Local family Garrett and Paige Morris have made a leap to turn their 58-acre homestead into a business: The Fifty-Eight Acre Wood, a name inspired by Winnie-the-Pooh. They offer homemade tallow sunscreen and a variety of flavored scones. It sounds like more is coming soon! You can follow along or shop their offerings here.

🛍️ Vendors Wanted for Krazy Daze Downtown
Just like the Doobie Brothers, the Downtown Stillwater Association is “takin’ it to the streets” for this year's (Stillwater’s 65th!) Krazy Daze summer sell-abration. They’re planning a Market & Music” street festival on Saturday, July 19 from 10 AM – 4 PM. Local vendors, food trucks, and live music will help transform S. Husband Street into more than just a passive shopping spot into more of a full-on community hangout.

If you sell art, baked goods, clothes, candles, vintage finds or anything else local, you are invited to apply to be a vendor. The deadline to signup is July 10. Apply here.

CIVIC UPDATES

SCAM alert ⛔
Scammers are impersonating Stillwater Utility & Billing, demanding immediate payment by phone. The City posted that they may call to notify you of disconnection risk but will never request payment or financial info over the phone. If in doubt, call Utility & Billing at (405) 742-8245 (option 9). Oh, and same for the unpaid toll fee texts. Those are a scam as well.

Downtown Traffic Signal Trial Underway 🚦
The City is testing four-way stops at Main & 7th, 8th, and 9th to improve safety and traffic flow. Temporary stop signs will replace the traffic lights during this trial period. Data is being collected to guide a long-term decision.

FEMA Aid Approved for March Wildfires 🏛️
If your home or business was impacted by the March wildfires, federal disaster assistance is now available. Eligible individuals may qualify for housing aid, low-interest loans, and more. Apply at disasterassistance.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Deadline to apply is July 22nd.

HAT TIPS 🎩👌

Members of Stillwater PD, Fire, OSU Police, Payne County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, and OHP came together this week to complete the annual “Murph” workout in honor of fallen service members. It’s a tough one: 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another mile—all in a 20-pound vest.

A clear reminder we’ve got some tough cookies serving in uniform. Congrats on the strenuosity!

LOCAL SPORTS

At the Top, Again ⛳ 🏆

Once again, we’ve got national champs walking among us. The OSU men’s golf team claimed the NCAA title yesterday, edging out Virginia 3-1. This marks the twelfth time they’ve achieved this honor.

Big congrats to head coach Alan Bratton and players Brady Catalano, Parker Bunn, Johnnie Clark, Collin Bond, Grant Gudgel, Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson, John Wild, Ethan Fang, Gaven Lane, Eric Lee, and Preston Stout for bringing it home.
