🏠︎ Lokal Life Letter #29

This Week's News & Events in Stillwater

Good morning, Stillwater!

Wow, I’m so excited by all the responses to last week’s poll. 86% of respondents voted “Aye” for the discount card. 14% voted “no”. So it appears that the ayes are above the noes 😉.

We’re talking with some of Stillwater’s best locally-owned places to eat while balancing for variety. I hope it will help out on a date or a family night out! I’ll be back next week with a list of who we have confirmed for the card. Vote below on what you’d like it to look like!

In today’s edition:

  • A large summer consignment sale, moved home 🏡

  • Library reopens as phase 2 moves on 🧊

  • A Plethora of Kids’ camps ⛺

This one’s a biggie! If it gets clipped, click “VIEW ENTIRE MESSAGE”. Let’s begin!

Time to Celebrate Summer! ☀️

The Payne County Farm Bureau Block Party is just about a week away, Saturday, May 31!

Head over towards the western Walmart on 6th and Country Club for the start at 9AM. It’s a Block Party, so you know there will be music, bounce houses and obstacle courses for the kids, cotton candy, snow cones, BBQ, coffee, and loads of local vendors with all kinds of goodies.

It’s free to attend, so come and go as you please.

📍 4721 W 6th Ave, Suite 200 | May 31 | 9 AM–Come & go

WHAT’S UP IN STILLWATER

The Library Reopens, Enters Phase 3 📚🛠️

This might date me, but when I heard the library was moving into Phase 3, my brain immediately jumped to Nick Fury in The Avengers barking, “I want every bit of Phase 2 on a truck and gone.” 🧊 And so it is with our library! They reopen today, kicking things off with Preschool Story time (2-5 yrs) at 9:30 AM (Enter through the lobby).

Phase 3 is the final stage of the renovation. The library is now operating out of the north meeting rooms while the main space gets its makeover. Go back with bookish glee, but quietly please, because

Roll for a Cause 🥋

The Jiu Jitsu Academy of Stillwater is hosting an Open Mat fundraiser benefiting We Defy Foundation, which supports combat veterans through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and fitness. You don’t need to be a member to come try it out, all are welcome! It’s a great way to find a troop, build strength and confidence, and learn how to become a sheepdog in disguise. We need more of those!

📍 Where: 1116 1/2 S. Main St
📅 When: Sunday, May 26 · 7–9pm
🎟️ Cost: Suggested $20 donation (100% goes to We Defy)

The Book Bus Rolls Again! 🚌 📖

Yep, more books and more rolling! Stillwater Public School’s beloved Book Bus hits the streets next week. Kids across Stillwater can show up and pick up a book to keep those reading muscles strong.

The route runs Monday–Thursday, making about four stops around town each day (except June 19 and July 4). Full schedule and map here.

A Plethora of Kid’s Camps 🏕️ 🤸🏼‍♀️

If your little one wants to get out this summer and kick boredom to the curb, Visit Stillwater has a roundup of local camps for all kinds of interests. Here are some that still have spots (or waitlists) as far as I can tell:

Readers! I’d love your input on design 🎨

Like I mentioned earlier, we’re still finalizing the list. In the meantime, our resident artist (my lovely wife Amber) has made some mockups. Each has a very different vibe. Which will be the Stillwater Lokal Life Discount Card? You choose!

LOCAL BUSINESS

Hooz da best? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Stillwater Newspress has opened the Best of Stillwater nominations for 2025. Nominate a business (or five) that make a difference. And if you’re looking for an extra daily good deed to do, throw ‘em a positive Google review. It can go a long way to help their business win even if they don’t get the prize 🙂.

Neon Ignite Candle Co. Drops New Scents 🕯️

Wait till you get a whiff of this! Local candle maker Michelle Brooks of Neon Ignite Candle Co. makes candles that smell so good you want to eat them (like doughnuts, fruity cereals, waffles). She just announced some new scents—Irish Cream Coffee, Sweet Strawberry, and Blood Moon.

Local Business Birthdays! 🎂

Owner Robbie Daugherty and his crew at Red Dirt Euro and EV recently celebrated their first year in business. They are a family-owned, independent auto shop focused on European and electric vehicles and they look like a happy shop!

Also new(ish) on the scene: Campus Court, a fresh spot for RV parking and tiny home rentals, and Lanie Renea Photo, offering bright, natural-light photography for families, grads, businesses, and couples. Down the road a piece in Yale is Feelin' Sassy, a pet grooming business. They do dogs and cats and llamas (yep!) and any unfortunate pet who crossed paths with a skunk.

And I know there are more out there 🕵🏼‍♂️ I’m just hunting for digital breadcrumbs. If you’ve got a lead on a new local business, send it my way!

I found some new Job postings! Posted here.

HAT TIPS 🎩👌

10 years, 100 Littles, and 10,000 dogs

Music to our ears: For the ninth year in a row and the tenth time overall(!), Stillwater Public Schools has been named a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. SPS is one of only four districts in the state to earn the honor this year, and the only one with a streak this long. Hats off to our teachers, students, and families for keeping music a proud part of the Pioneer tradition. Read more here.

A Retirement Pawty: After 17 years leading the Humane Society, Jackie Ross‑Guerrero is retiring as Executive Director. She has helped over 10,000 dogs find their forever homes and left paw prints on the hearts of countless Stillwater families. Thank you, Jackie, for a legacy of love and compassion. More info here.

100 more reasons to be proud of Stillwater:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma recently celebrated 100 matches in Stillwater in just their first quarter. That’s 100 young lives with a little more encouragement, support, and friendship. Cheers to every Big, Little, and the team making it happen! More info here.
