Good morning, Stillwater! Everyone else still drying off? Sheesh! Here’s to a sunny, warmer weekend after that deluge. And this Sunday, May the fourth be with you, the sunny, light side of the fourth. 🥋
In today’s edition:
Library Book Sale is here…at the Community Center! 📚
Leave Your Trials on the Trails 🥾
Stillwater’s Big Band turns 20
Lots of great folks to recognize
Let’s get right to it!
– Nate Cheever
Sponsored By The Dragon
The Dragon is Stillwater’s newest and most hoppin’ Chinese restaurant. It occupies the space left by the former Red Lobster. If you love Chinese food, checkout their menu.
And if restaurant eating isn’t your vibe, you can always takeout and enjoy your fried rice and wontons at home eating at the coffee table watching Brooks and Capehart on the PBS Newshour before settling in for a movie…or whatever your dine-in tradition is 😁 🥟 🥡

WHAT’S UP IN STILLWATER
Legendary Comics Holds Free Comic Book Day 🦸♀️
Comic fans big and small: Legendary Comics is celebrating Free Comic Book Day this Saturday, May 3! They’re also having a store-wide sale. I know Christmas is a long ways off, but it could be a great chance to get some for that brother/nephew/grandson/ (grandpa?). It’s at 113 S Perkins Rd, located in Knight Arms Game Store from 9:30 AM and 7 PM. The sale is Saturday only!
Library Spring Book Sale is Back (New Location) 📚
Just like in times past, there will be thousands of neat books available for dirt cheap for The Friends of the Library book sale. And yes you’ll likely see the tiger moms scooping up every dog-eared copy of Charlotte’s Web for their homeschool shelves,

people fumbling for cash because they realized the Friends don’t take cards, and the flippers scanning barcodes hunting for resale dollars (save some for the nerds!). It’s a great time! But this time there’s a major difference—The sale has moved to the Stillwater Community Center (315 W. 8th Ave.), while the Library it’s getting updated.
📅 May 1–4 (Remember, cash/check only!)
🕔 Preview Night: Thursday, 5–8 PM ($10 or free for Friends members)
📖 Public Sale: Friday 12–8 PM, Saturday 10 AM–5 PM
💸 $1 Bag Sale: Sunday, 1–3 PM
Craftapalooza Wandering Market 🛍️

Leave Your Trials on the Trails This Sunday 🧹
The Lake McMurtry crew would love your help this Sunday for a few hours of trail TLC. I did trail work once and got the chance to work with a gnarly tool called the McLeod. It’s half flat shovel, half rake with an attitude. But McLeod or not, tools will be provided, and you can’t help feeling good doing service AND being in nature. Add to that lunch is provided! 🥪

Stillwater Big Band Turns 20 🎷🎶
Just down the hallway from the book sale on Friday night, the Stillwater Big Band is putting on a special concert to celebrate two decades of toe-tapping tunes. I saw them perform at the Christmas concert and they had that quality of being laid-back, playing amongst friends feel while doing it professionally. Checkout their program here.

LOCAL BUSINESS
🐶 Bow Wow Bouffant announced this week they now offer tinsel hair extensions for your fluffy dog companions.
🍽️ Buffetria restaurant Roscoe’s Feed Shack announced they’re on track to open their second location (they’re not leaving us here in Stillwater thank goodness), The Perry Meal-House Restaurant, in Perry this Friday, May 2nd. It’s a fine historical-feel restaurant, which I appreciate.
🛒 Jen Birchfield, owner of The Local Source Market, a farm-to-market grocery store that will stock locally grown food, announced this week they will be coming to the old Causley building downtown (on the corner of 9th Ave and Husband, across from the southeast corner of Block34)!
🥇The CEO of Toyota Motors North America recognized our very own Juergen Janzen of Janzen Toyota with the President’s award for CustomerFirst. Out of soooo many Toyota dealerships in America, we have the best one! And not only that, they’ve gotten it 25 years in a row!
🚀 Mr. Alex Evers notified me that Meridian Technology Center’s Small Business University business accelerator has just opened up for applications again. This year they will include the Riata Center for Entrepreneurship (OSU) as a partner for the programing. There’s no cost to be in the program but spots are limited to 25. Deadline to register is May 13th. More info is here, how to register is here.
✂️ Parrillas Mexican Cocina, Stillwater’s newest Mexican restaurant, joined the Chamber of Commerce and is having their ribbon-cutting ceremony today at 1713 Boomer Rd at 4:30 PM. (No website or socials found unfortunately).
Job postings I’ve found are live here.
HAT TIPS 🎩👌

Two new fine-mustached recruits, Deken Jones and Jared Hall, were officially welcomed at their pinning ceremony yesterday, April 30th, as Stillwater Fire Department’s newest firefighters. Thanks for stepping up to serve our community!

The love of Stillwater burning bright in Boston: OSU grad and Boston chef Sarah Wade raised $3,000 for Stillwater wildfire relief through her restaurants, Stillwater and Sloane’s. For two weeks, 20% of sales from Oklahoma comfort food items went to help out her “second home”. Hallie Hart wrote a nice piece about Sarah here.

John Mills, longtime Stillwater educator, was honored for 45 years of service on the Payne County Youth Services Board of Directors. He’s held every leadership role on the board and has been a steady, guiding voice for the organization. Though he’s stepping down, he’ll continue serving on the Advisory Board—his dedication to local youth is deeply appreciated. (More here)
