🏠︎ Lokal Life Letter #19

This Week's News & Events in Stillwater

Good morning, Stillwater. A hearty congrats to SLL subscriber Sherril Moore, who correctly cracked the classified code! I got a bunch of guesses, but the correct answer is the Library on Duck St.

In today’s edition:

  • Where you can shop for more eggs

  • Lunar eclipse comes tonight 🌙

  • Downtown road closures 🚧

  • Mid South race times 🏁

  • Free meals for kids

Let’s get into it!

– Nate Cheever

Don’t paws now! 😃 🐾

We need more pups to fill out our Mutt Madness bracket! Maybe we won’t hit a full 64-team showdown, but let’s shoot for a Sweet 16!. We’ve already got some seriously cute dogs entered—let’s add yours to the lineup!

If you haven’t heard of Mutt Madness, here’s how it works:

🐶 Enter your dog for just $25, with half of all proceeds supporting the Stillwater Humane Society.

🐶 Once we have a bracket, the competition begins! Each round, the community votes, and the pack gets thinned down—until we crown Stillwater’s Top Dog!

🐶 The last pup standing wins big: A custom pet portrait from Josh Dean Photography and a gift card + gift basket from Bow Wow Bouffant on Main Street (a $125 value!).

WHAT’S UP IN STILLWATER

The Mid South Takes Over Stillwater This Weekend! 🚴 🏃‍♀️

Stillwater’s mega-event of running, biking, music, celebrations, and grit is finally here! There’s a plethora of things happening around these races but here’s the bare bones:

📅 Friday, March 14 at 8 AM– Runners depart from Downtown Stillwater.
📅 Saturday, March 15 – Cyclists take off in waves from 7:30 - 8:30 AM. The party at the finish line starts at 7 PM.

For full race details, routes, and schedules, check out The Mid South official site or view the weekend detailed schedule here. I wish them fair weather and strong legs on their arduous and exciting adventures!

Making Jam with Patsy Rains – Tonight at 6 PM 🍓🍇

If running and cycling aren’t your jam, perhaps jam …is! Mrs. Patsy Rains is holding a hands-on class tonight at 6 PM at Lost Creek United Methodist Church on how to make jam. Dinner and childcare will be provided so you can focus on learning the art of fruit preservation for a perfect spread.

Classic Cinema at the Center Presents... 📽🍿

This month’s classic movie is All About Eve. It’s a good bet for a wholesome movie night: the cast (Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, Marilyn Monroe, George Saunders), multiple Oscar awards, 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.2 on IMDB.

The movie starts at 7 PM in the Winfry Houston Auditorium at the Center. It’s free! and complimentary drinks, candy and popcorn are provided. Bring a date. Dress up like you’re from 1950! Or don’t. Either way, it’s going to be swell!

🍳Thanks to Lokal Life reader Dana Reedy for letting me know my Homeland egg prices were spoiled last week. Apparently the prices on their website aren’t always what’s in the store. Last night I drove over there to double check the prices, so this is gospel as of 12:43 AM Thursday.

More places to buy eggs 🥚

I forgot to mention the Stillwater Farmer’s Market. They have several local farms selling eggs (plus lots of other great products) every Saturday.

Morning View Farm, Whitmore Farm, Le Joli Poulet, Shiloh Farms, and H&A Farm offer eggs at the market.

📍 Where: Inside the Prairie Arts Center (1001 S. Duck St.)
🕙 When: Saturday, 10 AM – 12 PM

I don’t know the price ranges yet. If you go, email me what you find! Fresh, local eggs are always worth checking out! 🍳

LOCAL BUSINESS

It’s not everyday art and business collide. But it has on 721 S Main St this week. If you’re downtown, you might notice the newly completed mural over Modella Art Gallery. It’s full of vibrant purples, yellows and abstract shapes that perfectly compliments their logo. Hats off to the artist Katie Hoffmeier on the painting!

⚡ This just in—The Dragon, a new Asian restaurant, has taken over the old Red Lobster location on Perkins. Not much info yet, but I’ll share details as soon as I get them.

Is your little one “hungry as a camel” all the time? Do/might they like Mexican food? El Tapatio Authentic Mexican Restaurant is doing a deal now: free kids meals every Wednesday and Sunday. Wednesday they’re open from 11-9 PM and Sunday from 11-4 PM. Just don’t be surprised after eating all that yummy food if you find yourself saying “Chancho, I need to borrow some sweats!”

Humble Hustle welcomes Rose 🏭 🌹

Julia VanBrunt, owner of Humble Hustle on 1905 N Boomer, recently made a big investment in a pneumatic heat press machine she’s named Rose. Rose is going to help her process and deliver larger bulk orders faster. How impressive! Great to see a small manufacturing business growing!
