🏠︎ Lokal Life Letter #14
This Week's News & Events in Stillwater
Good morning, Stillwater! Is it just me, or does it feel like everyone is sick right now? It hit our house last month, and if it’s hitting yours, I’m sorry. Hang in there, this too shall pass.
A couple of things that helped us (besides meds): If you’re freezing and can’t get warm, try microwaving a sock half full of white rice. One minute in the microwave, and boom—you’ve got yourself a little heater. Throat Coat tea also worked wonders, and for the ultimate recovery plan, I highly recommend watching a great Western classic, like High Noon 🤠. So good!
On a totally different note, here are some notes I received from last week’s post that about got me choked up:
"Best newsletter ever! I feel like a part of the community now! Thanks!"
"I have lived in Perkins for the last couple of years, and this paper has offered more info on community activities than any other place I’ve looked... thank you."
Mission accomplished. If this newsletter is helping you feel more connected to the community, then it’s doing exactly what it’s meant to do.

Local Business Shout-out 👉 Primetime Meat & Wine
Your One-Stop Shop for Valentine’s Day
Yes, they’re building a rep for their meats—especially the chicken bomb (more on that in a sec). If you’re cooking a special at-home dinner, they’ve got the meats (sorry, Arby’s) and the wine.

Inside Primetime Meat and Wine, 919 S. Main St.
But that’s just the beginning. When you go inside you discover they have boxes of chocolates, decorated PB chocolate cups, couch mixes, fun murder mystery party games and baked beans that Alex, the owner, swears are “the best baked beans you’ll have in your life.”
We tried their chicken bomb for dinner last night and it was very tasty. The chicken was moist, the cheddar cheese oozed out of it, and it was wrapped in two layers of bacon. Even our two-year-old approved, shouting “Mmm, yummy! Chicken bomb!”

Last night’s Chicken Bomb (halfway cooked).
Keep an eye on their Facebook page for chicken bomb deal days. We’ll be going back for sure.

A Quiet Place…to study in Stillwater 🤫
Where’s a quiet place to study in town? It’s a good question—even if it was asked twice with the exact same wording 🧐. Regardless, here’s where locals say you can find some quietude:
🥇Aspen Coffee – 6 mentions
🥈Panera Bread – 5 mentions
🥉Balanced Coffee Co. – 4 mentions
👏Stillwater Public Library – 3 mentions
Wandering Brew (Perkins) – 3 mentions
WorkIT Coworking Center – 2 mentions
Fired Up Stilly – 2 mentions
Roundhouse Bakery – 2 mentions
McAlister’s Deli – 2 mentions
Red Rock Bakery – 1 mention
At least now we know where to go if an alien invasion ever requires absolute silence.
🛒 Price Check: Stillwater Grocery Report
Wow, thanks for the participation in last week’s poll! 71/71 voted to keep this as a regular feature and requested some add-ons. I hope it’s helpful, because tracking down deals can be a tough egg to crack.
Here’s how milk, eggs, and bread stack up across stores this week:
Item | Homeland | Aldi | Walmart | Braum’s | Sprouts |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
🥛 2% Milk (Gallon) | $4.99 | $4.15 | $3.74 | $4.59 | $6.19 |
🍞 White Sandwich Bread (20 oz) | $1.99 | $1.55 | $1.42 | $1.99 | $4.49 |
🥚 Grade A Large Eggs (Dozen) | $5.15 | $4.17 | $7.99 | $4.99 | |
Total | $10.67 | $10.85 | $9.33 | $14.57 | $15.67 |
If you're looking to save a few bucks, Walmart seems to have the best deals on milk and bread, while Homeland has an edge on eggs.

This student-run festival supports the Stillwater Rock Academy, helping fund scholarships and purchase instruments for students.

🏛️ Historic 824 Main Street Building Changes Hands
Congrats to Mr. Alex Evers on the sale of 824 Main St., a building with a long history going back to the 1890s. Once a bank, church, school, and Cooksey’s Grocery Store, currently it’s home to Stillwater Martial Arts. This week, Evers announced the property has been sold to Counseling & Behavioral Specialists of Oklahoma.
Restaurant Closings & Openings
🌮 I know it’s hard to taco-bout it, but Ted’s Tacos is permanently closed.
🌯 Meanwhile, Sandwich Planet is now serving up shawarma, hummus, and even fried bananas on North Perkins.

WEATHER
On February 2nd, the legendary Punxsutawney Phil proclaimed six more weeks of winter. Staten Island Chuck said we’re in for an early Spring. Meanwhile, Georgia’s General Beauregard Lee—named after not one but two Confederate generals—has been 80% accurate over the last two decades, and he’s siding with Phil: six more weeks of winter.
Last weekend, I would’ve bet against him. But looking at this forecast… maybe we should just trust the experts.
Should Stillwater get its own oversized squirrel to settle these disputes once and for all? 🦫(Like our own version of Punxsutawney Phil) |
